Abstract: The article considers the functions of the music background in modern age and traces back their transformations in history. The author of the article makes an attempt to explain why the music background is so popular today, what it is necessary for and what it expresses in different situations of everyday life, as well as how the perception of music changes depending on the context in which it is played.
