Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of federalism which guarantees the preservation of identity of the Russian civilization under conditions of sharpened social and cultural contradictions and weakened consolidation functions of the state caused by the globalization processes ongoing in the world now. Historically formed type of Russian federalism allows to preserve and develop diversity of traditions, cultures and layers of the society which contributes to the revival of the Russian civilization identity.
