Closed Eyes: Gestures, Punctuation, Accentuation Abstract: The article analyzes the meaning of a ‘closed eyes’ gesture in the Russian spoken language. The author distinguishes the closed eyes as a fully independent gesture, semi-notional gesture accompanying negation and assertion as well as a ‘service’ gesture (blinking) which can be also interpreted as punctuation, accentual diacritical mark and a change of focus of attention.
